Preserving the Memory of the City: A Dialogue Through Time

Renovating historical areas is always a search for a balance between conservation and progress. Should an architect today copy historical forms? Direct imitation often devalues authentic history, turning the city into a stage set. Rethinking becomes an important principle, as the context includes not only physical forms, but also the “genetic code” of the place: its color palette, functional rhythms, and natural landscape.

If the task of rethinking the context is part of the ideology of the project, then the architecture should not mimic the past, but rather interpret it through modern materials and patterns, creating a relevant layer of urban history. We apply this approach to our projects. For example, in the project of a residential complex on the Belaya River in Ufa, where we have encoded the history of the site into the color and patterns of the facades.
  • Industrial copper: Copper-bronze hues reference the aesthetics of port cranes and railway containers, evoking the transport impulse that gave life to this area.
  • Wood and gradient: The gray-brown sections with a gradient pattern are a modern interpretation of the cladding old wooden houses that once stood on this site.
  • Natural sand: The beige tones symbolize the proximity to the Belaya River and the natural landscape.
  • Details: decorative elements above the windows in the shape of a channel and an I-beam, are a subtle reference to the metal structures of railway tracks.

Through its variety of morphotypes and subtle coloring, the residential complex becomes a new point of attraction. This project explores how contemporary architecture can be deeply contextual without resorting to direct historical imitation.
