Kaskad School

The distinctive features of the project are the elongated configuration of the site and a 8-meter elevation difference across the site. We transformed the disadvantages of the plot into its advantages by organizing the terrain with the school building itself.

The building is arranged in a cascade along the terrain, connecting terraces at different elevations and the flow of residents, thus creating a connected development area for the school. The landscaping of the terrain is organized as an open amphitheater, which continues under the overhanging part of the building and extends into the interior, forming a lecture hall in the library. This allows for the integration of the landscape into the interior, creating a multifunctional space for learning and leisure activities.

The key feature of the EO (Educational Organization) spatial and planning structure is the formation of three terraces on which the main functional blocks of the school are located: the upper terrace with the primary school block and the public function; the second terrace with an additional entrance and an amphitheater; and the third terrace with the sports area and the high school playgrounds. The amphitheater area connects the external and internal spaces, permeating the building and forming a multifunctional public area.

The zoning of the territory is functionally connected to the blocks of the school: the playgrounds for primary classes are located on Terrace 1 with the primary school block; the block for secondary and high school is located in the opposite part of the building and has a transit to the sports area; the public block with an amphitheater is located on Terrace 2 and is separated from the playgrounds. Residents have access to the sports area outside of school hours. This way, the main flows are separated, creating a comfortable environment for students and visitors.

The expressive architectural image is formed by the terracing principle, applied both to the volume of the building itself and the organization of the territory and landscaping. The dynamics of the forms resonate with the building and landscaping of the PEI, creating a silhouetted composition of the development that reflects the identity of the place: in this part of Khabarovsk, there is Orekhovaya Sopka, a hill about 150 m high.

The layout is designed to provide spaces for children’s holistic development and various learning formats. Functional zones are arranged around a central communal core. The educational modules include classrooms for traditional lectures, adaptable classrooms for blended learning, and multifunctional recreational areas. The elementary school features its own community center in the form of a multi-level recreation area designed for various usage scenarios.
