Knowledge Ecosystem: From Kindergarten to Community Center in One Building

The format of educational complexes that combine a kindergarten, a school, and a community center is becoming increasingly popular today. This type of building is not only a solution to improving the efficiency of land use, but also a strategic tool for creating a unified educational trajectory for children and promoting social sustainability in the area.

The Benefits of integration
Combining multiple functions in one space offers several advantages:
  • Cost-efficiency: Optimizing the building footprint, utilizing shared utilities, and establishing a centralized kitchen.
  • Educational continuity: Facilitating a seamless transition from kindergarten to elementary school reduces stress and promotes learning continuity.
  • Social magnet: Transforming the school from a closed facility operating until 3 p.m. into a community hub that effectively utilizes the resources of the building during non-school hours.

An important aspect is the creation of a comprehensive planning interconnection. A real educational center is not a mechanical connection of planning blocks through expansion joints, but a space for creating different scenarios and a living community. Free connections between functional areas allow for mentorship programs, such as high school students teaching preschoolers, and provide younger groups access to the school infrastructure, such as a media library or art workshops.

Case Study: Educational and Training Center in Yekaterinburg for 1,575 students. The akvk+partners team’s project clearly demonstrates how a complex site configuration and urban planning restrictions can form the basis for expressive design.
The composition is based on a central core with public functions, such as cafeteria, assembly hall, media library, gyms. Autonomous educational blocks are consolidated around this core:
  • Kindergarten (225 children);
  • Elementary school;
  • Secondary and high school.
The main entrance is accentuated by the active plasticity of the façade: the offset volumes interpret the image of a “stack of books”, emphasizing the educational identity of the building. The supports of the entrance group not only carry a structural load, but also serve as art objects referencing the symbolism of the coat of arms of Yekaterinburg.
School as a Community Center (SCC)
The project sets a new standard for interaction with the city. Through planning zoning and access control, the learning sections can be isolated while the community core remains open to residents.

Key features of the planning solution:
  1. Autonomy and safety: Each age group has its own independent entrance and isolated outdoor areas.
  2. Community resource: There is a separate entrance for local residents to access the workshop area, library, and sports cluster.
  3. Flexibility of use: The workshop area is designed as a standalone block with its own wardrobe and bathrooms. This allows for the organization of public workshops without disrupting school operations.
The educational complex in Yekaterinburg is an example of new architectural pedagogy. The project shows that modern schools should be flexible spaces that support children's growth in open, inspiring, and diverse environments, not “fortresses.”
